QV Skincare is a complete emollient therapy range consisting of two cleansers (QV Gentle Wash and QV Bath Oil) and three moisturisers (QV Cream, QV Skin Lotion and QV Intensive Ointment) (Table 1). The two cleansers can simply be used to cleanse the skin while helping to leave it hydrated and intact at the same time. The three moisturisers contain ‘triple moisturising’ technology, and are designed to aid in the management of both healthy skin and dry skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. When used appropriately and regularly, QV cleansers and moisturisers can effectively reduce water loss from the outermost layer of skin (the stratum corneum) and maintain the skin’s protective/barrier function, resulting in soft and supple skin.[1]

 

The benefits of cleansers with moisturising attributes

The primary function of a cleanser is to cleanse the skin. In addition, well-formulated cleansers can also hydrate/moisturise the skin and promote its barrier function. Even though cleansers are designed to remove dirt, sweat and oils from the skin, they should not strip the skin's natural waterproofing lubricant (sebum), lipids or protective natural moisturising factor. Ideally, cleansers should be free from soap, fragrance, colour and common irritants, and instead achieve their cleansing properties through the use of gentle, pleasant to use and easy to rinse off ingredients known as syndets (synthetic detergents), which are a type of surfactant. These syndets aid in the uplifting of dirt and solubilisation of oils, but after cleansing, the skin’s pH remains at its natural level, which is moderately acidic (between 4.0 and 5.0).[2-6]

1. QV Gentle Wash

This soap alternative, gently foaming cleanser can help to cleanse the skin without stripping the skin of its natural oils. QV Gentle Wash is dermatologically tested and free from common irritants, making it ideal for dry, sensitive or itchy skin.[1]

 

2. QV Bath Oil

This non-greasy, soap-free and preservative-free cleanser is easily absorbed by the skin. QV Bath Oil disperses evenly throughout bath water. QV Bath Oil is dermatologically tested and free from common irritants, making it ideal for very dry, sensitive or itchy skin.[1]

 

The benefits of moisturisers

The primary function of moisturisers is to prevent moisture loss from the skin and increase overall hydration levels. The best types of moisturisers are those that contain ingredients from all three groups of moisturiser type: emollients, humectants and occludents. Products containing this triple moisturising technology are able to more effectively mimic the skin’s natural moisturising action, to smooth the skin surface and increase water content in the epidermis.[2-6] Emollients, such as silicones, hydrate and improve the appearance of the skin by contributing to skin softness and smoothness. Humectants, such as glycerine, sponge up water, drawing it up from the deeper layers of the skin to the skin’s surface. Finally, occludents, such as paraffin oil, hold water in and create a protective barrier over the skin, slowing the evaporation of water from the surface of the skin. [2,7-11]

Moisturisers can be used for everyday skin (healthy skin) maintenance or for the management of dry, flaky, itchy and inflamed skin, [2-6,12,13] and underlying dry skin conditions such as eczema, [13,14] xerosis, [13,15] psoriasis[13,16,17] and itch (pruritus). [13,18]

The QV Skincare range[1] includes three moisturisers: (1) QV Cream, [1] (2) QV Skin Lotion[1] and (3) QV Intensive Ointment[1] (Table 1). Each of these three moisturisers uses a triple moisturising system of emollients, humectants and occludents to mimic the ways the skin naturally moisturises itself. [1]

 

1. QV Cream

This non-greasy, low-irritant and rich moisturising cream protects against water loss by sealing in the skin own natural moisture. QV Cream is a moisturiser that can provide a protective barrier for the skin (for example, after exposure to harsh climatic conditions).[1]

 

2. QV Skin Lotion

This light, low-irritant, all-over body moisturising lotion can be used for everyday relief of dry skin and it can be applied as often as required to affected areas. QV Skin Lotion repairs and soothes dry skin.[1]

 

3. QV Intensive Ointment

This non-greasy, low-irritant and preservative-free, highly moisturising ointment hydrates the skin. QV Intensive Ointment protects and soothes chronically dry skin, sensitive and itchy skin and eczema-prone skin.[1]
